"Gebrauchsanweisung Island" by Kristof Magnusson

Kristof Magnusson describes his country and its people and makes clear, that Iceland with just about 300,000 inhabitants has to maintain a state system and achieve great sporting and other successes. Iceland is often at the top of evaluations per capita. For example it has the highest number of winner of the nobel prize for literature per capita in the world: 1.

"Liebe Isländer" by Huldur Breidfjörd

Huldur Breidfjörd lives in Reykjavik and one day he decided to round Iceland in January and February with a car. He bought a jeep called "Lappi" and drove off without a plan, but with the desire to meet his fellow countrymen. The author describes his everyday encounters and the warm welcome by the people.

"Frauen Fische Fjorde" by Anne Siegel

Iceland applied for workers on Icelandic farms in Germany in 1948. About 300 people, mostly women, followed the call. This book is told the story of six of these women and forms the basis for the book "NordBräute".

"NordBräute" by Anne Siegel

This is a fictional story about three German women based on the life stories of women in the book "Frauen Fische Fjorde". The Icelanders protested in 1948 against entry into NATO and in 2008 against the government and the banks during the banking crisis. These two historical events are the beginning and the end of the story.

"Todesrosen" by Arnaldur Ingriðason

I listened to the audiobook, although crime stories are not my favorites, but I learnt interessting things about Iceland and the Icelanders during the investigations of Erlendur Sveinsson. The story begins with the discovery of a dead young woman on the flower covered tomb of the Icelandic freedom fighter Jon Sigurdsson.
The book is available in Englisch, but I couldn't find it on Amazon. The title is "Roses of Death".

"Operation Napoleon" by Arnaldur Ingriðason

On the largest glacier in Europe, the Vatnajökull, a plane crashed at the end of the World War II. It wasn't found and swallowed by the glacier. The aircraft get visible on satellite shots decades later. The Americans want to retrieve secretly the aircraft and kill to keep the secret.
